Time off

September 26th, 2006

Next week is the beginning of the new semester, so I decided to take some time off… Just for the sake of it *grins*. Hey, I barely took any holidays this summer, and I’ve been going to the university nearly every week day, so I deserve it! *Trying to convince myself*. Anyway, it’s actually quite a good timing on my part. Firstly, because fasting has just started, so I can take it easy now and laze about, not doing that much (or any) work. It’s easier to do more shopping too, since I have to buy lots of stuff to cook for buka puasa. Secondly, because the semester is starting next week, this week is the induction week (or called fresher’s week here). Meaning all those new students (and their parents probably) are going to be all over the place. It’s always good to avoid all that massive crowd! Thirdly, and quite coincidentally, my supervisor is not around for the better part of this week, so I can’t see him anyway. So, all in all, quite a good time to take some time off *grins*. And I do feel I need a break before jumping straight back into attending courses and doing research at the same time again.

Anyway, how do I spend my time off, you might wonder. Well, obviously I’m entertaining myself with the help of my faithful laptop and the wonder of the Internet *grins*. Yup, lots of surfing, reading fanfiction and on-line comics, and watching anime on YouTube… As I’ve said, barely any work at all. I’m quite enjoying my time off *grins again*. Of course, I still have a few days left, so I might get horribly bored by then, but that’s another story.

Talking about anime, it’s actually a friend of mine who suggested (indirectly) to watch anime on YouTube (thanks AJ! *grins*). Since I don’t have a TV and downloading takes a huge amount of time and space, this is the easiest way to access any anime available. There are quite a lot of choices of anime available on YouTube; however, the screen thing is a bit small. Oh well, beggars can’t be choosers, right? Again, thanks AJ for recommending Saiunkoku Monogatari, it’s a really interesting anime! And quite funny too…

Fasting

September 23rd, 2006

Happy Ramadhan and happy fasting to everyone!!

Today is the first day of fasting here in the UK. And I almost missed it, because I was thinking it’s probably going to be on Sunday, so I was completely blindsided by the news last night. Luckily, I got packets of instant noodles laying around for such emergencies *grins*.

And for the fellow Muslims in Malaysia, you people will only start fasting tomorrow, right? Well, this is rather… awkward. I guess this means we will probably not celebrate Hari Raya on the same day too… Er, really awkward. But still, selamat berpuasa to you all too!

Aaah, I’m really going to miss all those delicious buka puasa food back in Malaysia *pouts*.

Sound_of_music- Think happy thoughts..

Autumn equinox

September 21st, 2006

This Saturday the autumn equinox is supposed to happen; it’s also called the September equinox. By the way, what is equinox? According to the Wikipedia,

"An equinox in astronomy is the moment when the Sun is located right over the equator. The event occurs twice a year, around March 20 and September 23. More technically, the equinox happens when the Sun is at one of two opposite points on the celestial sphere where the celestial equator and ecliptic intersect. In a wider sense, the equinoxes are the two days each year when the center of the Sun spends an equal amount of time above and below the horizon at every location on Earth. The word equinox derives from the Latin words aequus (equal) and nox (night)."

So on Saturday, the day time will be equal to the night time. I guess it’s not really that obvious in Malaysia, since we’re so close to the equator. But it’s very obvious here in the UK, as before the autumn equinox, the day time is much longer than the night time, but after this the day time will get shorter and shorter. So it’s a rather noteworthy phenomenon! *Grins*. And according to a local friend, this is when the autumn season supposedly starts. I’m looking forward to the sight of falling leaves…

Ravenclaw_haruhi - Haruhi is definitely a Ravenclaw! *Grins*. Apart from Kyouya, I really like Haruhi too.

Busy times

September 17th, 2006

Yeah, it has been a busy time for me these past few days. The main thing is of course work, work, and more work! Which is actually good news for my research of course *grins*. But other than that,  I’ve been busy packing my stuff to move to a new room. Packing is SO troublesome! I hate packing! Ergggggh! Of course, it’s when you’re packing that you notice how much stuff you actually have… *Sheepish grin*. And I actually went and bought more stuff for my new room. Hence, I’ve also been busy shopping. And next week (or rather, starting from tomorrow) I’ll also be busy attending a 3-day conference at my university. Busy, busy times…

Kyoya_slytherin - Kyouya is such a Slytherin material *evil smirk*.

Fun times

September 10th, 2006

I had fun these past few days. Yeah, how utterly surprising *grins*. On Friday night, my friends and I went out for dinner at this Italian restaurant (the not-so-expensive kind though *grins*), and after that we went to the house of one of my friends to play… UNO! Yup, and I have to confess that was my first time ever playing UNO *sheepish grin*. It was really fun though. We started off with the basic rules, but after a few rounds the rules became more and more challenging. I’m happy to report that I didn’t get the highest score (yay for me!); my score was somewhere in the middle. Not too bad for a first timer *grins*.

On Saturday, I had quite a busy day. In the morning, a couple of friends and I went to an IKEA store near Bristol. This was the first time that I (and my friends) went to IKEA (another first!); I’ve never even been to the one in KL. Anyway, it was a huge store… My legs were getting tired from walking all over the place, and my head was getting pretty dizzy from looking at all the various stuff! The array of stuff that they got there was pretty darn amazing. Actually, the reason for the trip was both of my friends wanted to buy some stuff for their house; I was only there for the ride. But I ended up buying stuff too *grins*. Well, just some cheap stuff like hangers and tupperware, nothing fancy. Although I could have bought a whole bedroom in there…

I arrived home from the trip to IKEA sometime in the afternoon. After that, I had to rush off to meet a Malaysian friend of mine from London who was visiting Bath on a tour trip (yeah, I mean you Mark!). It was a disappointingly short meeting (I was so looking forward to showing him around Bath *grins*), but it was still nice to be able to meet him before he goes home to Malaysia. If you’re reading this Mark, I hope you’ll enjoy going back to work! *Evil laughter*.

Well, it was tiring, but fun, times… On another note, the new semester will be starting in October. I’m thinking of taking a few courses, so it’s back to school for me *sigh*. Of course, my research work never stops, so… *sigh again*. Add the fact that the fasting month will start at the end of next week, and you have a recipe for very interesting days ahead indeed…

New manga craze

September 7th, 2006

Yup, I got a new manga craze now. I’m currently following (diligently *grins*) a manga called Ouran High School Host Club. Yes, I confess, it’s a shoujo manga! *Gasp!* Well, for the uninformed, ’shoujo manga’ refers to the girly kind of manga. However, I found out that quite a lot of guys are actually following it too. Well, well, well… I don’t feel too bad then. *Grins*.

Anyway, this manga is quite funny, although the storyline is not that original; a girl dresses as a boy, you know, that sort of thing. But still, the drawings are really nice, and the characters are so kawaii… *Sigh*.

Apart from that, the manga has also been turned into an anime series. The anime follows the manga quite faithfully, with just little changes here and there. The opening song for the anime is quite catchy *grins*. To hear it (and watch some part of the 1st episode too), you can go to my profile page, or go here. However, I feel that after reading the manga, the anime is less enjoyable. Maybe it’s because I know what’s going to happen next? …Probably. Oh well, it’s still nice!

Kyoya - One of my favourite characters from Ouran High School Host Club. He’s also called the Shadow King… Take a guess why.

Usual stuff

September 5th, 2006

1157409254 Yesterday, Tiger Woods won his fifth straight PGA tournament for this season. This victory gave him seven titles in only 14 tournaments this year, a staggering victory rate of 50 percent. He also won for the 53rd time in his whole career. Go Tiger!

Apart from following the occasional golf news, it has been the usual for me: work, work and more work. At least I managed to get my program working. Yay for me! Now all I have to do is try to determine what could go wrong with the program. And of course, write up a small report to explain how it actually works. Yup, more work then. *Sigh*.
