Of money

February 28th, 2007

Money makes the world go round.

Well, at least money does affect your everyday life. And it’s a very popular topic of conversation too; I recently read a few interesting articles related to money.

The first article was on the highest paying careers - after all, we’re usually on the lookout for jobs that can give us more money, don’t we? *winks* Anyway, the top job goes to healthcare (unsurprisingly), i.e. doctor, dentist, surgeon, etc. Of course, that doesn’t include the cost and time to get a job like that in the first place… I feel your pain! The next highest paying career is in computer sciences (surprisingly), followed by law (again, I’m not surprised). So now you know which area to aim for… *grins*

The other article that I read was really interesting - it’s about how to cope when the wife makes more money than the husband. In this era, this sort of situation is becoming more and more common. Of course, I’m still single, but hey, better be prepared for any eventualities, right? Anyway, the article gives rather good advice on how to deal with the male ego and the female sensibilities - the main one being of course lots of communication. And to not dry you dirty laundry in public! (good one!)

Of walking and hills

February 24th, 2007

I’ve been walking a lot these two days. And busy too.

Last night, I went to a friend’s house to hang around with a few friends, and I had to climb a really steep hill to get there! Anyway, we just chatted, ate snacks and played several rounds of Uno. Do you how hard it is to play Uno with 12 people?! It’s really hard. And terribly confusing too, especially when you add those ‘extra’ rules. But it was fun too. *grins*

This morning I had to go to another friend’s house to discuss some stuff, and it also involved walking up a hill (although not as steep as the previous one). After that, I had to walk (again) to the supermarket to buy some stuff.

And then, this afternoon a different friend invited me to her house for a small farewell party, as she’s going home to Malaysia. And yes, it involved more walking, and a hill too! *groans* But the food was nice, and the company was great. I had fun - thanks Mariana for inviting me! *grins*88_pain_1

All in all, I’m feeling dead tired now.

Swan Lake

February 22nd, 2007

I went to see a performance at the Theatre Royal Bath tonight;Trb_2 it’s the first time that I’ve been to a theatre, ever. By the way, Theatre Royal Bath has quite a long history behind it - it was built in 1805! The inside looks exactly like I imagined it to be - very Regency novel-ish. *grins*.

Anyway, back to the performance. It’s actually a ballet Swanlakeperformance called ‘Swan Lake’, performed by the Moscow City Ballet, which I heard is very famous. Unfortunately, I could only remember a little bit of the story, so I was a bit clueless during the performance. But hey, I don’t really need much background to recognize the hero (the prince), the heroin (the princess who was turned into a swan a.k.a. swan princess) and the bad guy (the evil sorcerer). Actually, one of the most entertaining characters was the jester! And I just have to comment on the heroine’s very, er, bendable arms, especially when she’s portraying a swan - it’s just amazing!

Summary of the story (adapted from the info in Wikipedia): The prince has to find a wife. He escapes into the forest, where he meets the princess Odette, who is bewitched by a evil sorcerer to turn into a swan by day and woman by night. They fall in love. There is a ball at the castle. The evil sorcerer brings her daughter Odile, who is disguised as Odette, except she wears black while Odette wears white (black swan vs white swan *grins*). The prince mistakes Odile for Odette (stupid prince!), and wants to marry her. He realizes his mistake, but it’s too late; Odette is destined to die of a broken heart. The prince then fights the evil sorcerer to the death (both of them died). "In death, the souls of Siegfried (the prince) and Odette are united in eternal happiness". The end.

The costumes were colourful, and the ballet dancing was quite nice (although it could get quite repetitive sometimes). All in all, I quite enjoyed myself (even though my seat was like at the very top and the very end of the theatre - cheap seat you understand). And most importantly, I got to see men in tights! *grins*

The changing workplace

February 14th, 2007

Lately I’ve been reading a few interesting articles about the changes in the working place. Well, they seem interesting to me. *grins*

Anyway, in one article, results from a new research done on Greek adults seem to encourage workers to take an afternoon siesta i.e. a midday nap, as it seems to reduce the risk of fatal heart problems, especially among men. These naps are said to reduce stress, and make workers more productive. So this means that more offices are allowing on-the-job naps these days. Comment: I thought we already have an afternoon break - it’s called lunch.

In another article, a company in America introduced a very radical change by abolishing schedule, and "judging performance on output instead of hours". This means that there are no specific working hours, and you can go to work at any time you want as long as you get your work done - "Work is no longer a place where you go, but something you do." Comment: Well, I don’t think the companies in Malaysia is going to adopt this anytime soon… They wouldn’t get anything done at all! *snickers*

Life as usual…

February 7th, 2007

I’m FINALLY updating my blog. You know why? Well, I just recovered from a serious case of flu, i.e. I was feeling really sick and like half-dying and not in the mood to write anything, not even to whine. Yeah, I was THAT sick. I even lost my appetite! (This rarely happens I assure you *grins*) But now thank God I’m on the road to recovery… I think it must have been shock - you know, travelling, jetlag, the change of weather and all that - that caused my body to just collapse. Anyway, a lot of other people around are also bitten by the flu bug, so I’m not totally surprised. And it’s also WINTER now - flu is quite common. Yeah, yeah, I’m just making excuses for my susceptible body to make me feel better. *grins*

Apart from that, nothing much is happening; there’re things to do, research work to be done, i.e. just the usual, routine, mundane stuff. It’s life as usual… *sigh*
