Of work & health
Yeah, yeah, it’s time for some interesting articles - some are on work (as usual):
Do You Talk Too Much? - okay, this articles can sort of apply to me, I guess. *sheepish smile* This also applies to work, as "… you’ll pay a big price for talking too much at work." And "If, in any conversation, you’re speaking more than 60% of the time, you’re talking too much." Hmmm…
Wired at Work: Avoiding the ‘Leash’ - people "use the same wireless device (cell phone, laptop, or "smart phone") for work and personal purposes", so there are "good and bad sides of being so connected to work." Well, for me I try to leave my work at the office, and try to enjoy my time off work. *grins*
Survey Reveals Most Satisfying Jobs - "professional jobs that involve helping or serving people are more satisfied with their work and overall are happier than those in other professions". That is a bit obvious, isn’t it…
And some articles are on health:
Info | Comment (0)12 Ways to Stay on Top of Stress - I have a fascination with articles related to stress (and how to overcome it). Why? Well, just wondering if the advice actually works or not.. *grins*
Foods that Lower Cholesterol - yeah, lower that cholesterol people! *smirks*
Postgrad Away Day
Yup, it’s that time of the year again. Last year, our department’s Postgrad Away Day was held near a golf course; this year, it’s the racecourse - the Bath Racecourse to be precise. My, my, we do get around don’t we? And to such interesting places too…
Anyway, the main agenda was a seminar on networking, which was quite interesting and enjoyable too; we had some interesting group activities, and the speaker was quite entertaining. The seminar was held at one of the executive boxes, which had a very good view of the entire racecourse.
After that, came the races! I managed to watch a few races from our box; I didn’t bet on any horses (of course), but it was quite fun just playing the guessing game. *grins* And the atmosphere was just simply amazing! Everyone was pretty excited. It was quite fun, even though the weather was not that good as it was drizzling a bit. However, I didn’t watch all the races as I went home early.
All in all, although it was fun, I guess this would be my one and only time going to a racecourse, as it’s free (the dept paid for it). *grins*
P/S: For more photos, look in my photo album.
Event | Comment (0)Articles
Yeah, yeah, I had nothing better (not!) to do these few days than reading articles, of some which are on food:
Is bottled water really better than tap? - "Bottled water is not necessarily healthier or safer than tap water…" Okay… "Twenty-five percent of all bottled water is actually repackaged tap water…" Really?!!
Top Smile Savers and Spoilers - For that (extra) sparkle on your teeth…
Some articles related to health:
Managing Migraines - If you sometimes (or even regularly) feel "a pain storm that splits (your) skull across (your) right temple, liquifying (your) brain until it feels like it’s oozing out through (your) ears…" then you definitely have to read this article.
Exercise linked to less anxiety, depression - Er, I knew that already? *sheepish smile* Although it’s quite difficult to follow… Ops?
- Er, a form of exercise maybe?
Of news and TV
I usually read The Star Online to get my daily news of Malaysia, you know, just to keep updated about the current stuff and all. And I must say, news about scams, like scams through Internet and SMS, quite frequently appear. However, today’s news on senior citizens’ ATM ploy really takes the cake. I mean, imagine that you’re trying to be kind by helping some senior citizens, and got robbed by them! It could also be a ploy of some syndicate to use these senior citizens to rob people, you know, like those syndicates that uses beggars to collect money. Anyway, it’s really sad that people can’t even be kind anymore, for fear of being rob, or worse. It’s a sad, sad world, people… *sigh*
Let’s get away from all that sad stuff, and concentrate on something pleasant, like TV shows. *grins* Yesterday I was feeling a bit bored, so I watched some American series called "Mythbusters" online - they basically try to bust various rumours and urban legends in popular culture. I got hooked on it while surfing Astro when I was back in Malaysia for a holiday - it was actually on the Discovery channel, can you believe it? *grins* I strongly recommend it, it’s really good and very interesting! And rather useful in confirming (or busting) some of those myths and rumours. Like the e-mails about handphones being dangerous in gas station? Not true!
Apart from that, I’m also following the latest cycle of America’s Next Top Model - cycle 8 actually. My guess (or hope) for the winner? Well, I’m rooting for Brittany, just because she takes really beautiful photos! *grins* Although she seems a bit whiny sometimes, she’s also a bit less bitchy. *smirks* Even if you aren’t watching the show, you can read about all the juicy details (and very sarcastic yet hillarious comments) on Yahoo TV. Have fun! *smirks again*
All in all, you can see that I’m rather busy these days. *cough,
cough*
Something interesting
Today is the last day of my break; it’s back to work tomorrow! *sob* And what have I been doing for the past few days? Well… Not much. Really.
Anyway, while surfing the Internet I managed to come across a few interesting articles on food:
Can Black Pepper Be Poisonous? - Okay, before coming to the UK chillies are my main source of spicy food, but now peppers are my best friend. *grins* So of course I was a tad concern about this article. But rest assured, as "The answer is, maybe, but you would have to use an awful lot of pepper for a long time to run into trouble." Thank God for small favours…
Ten Things Your Restaurant Will Not Tell You - I really, really recommend that you read this article. It’s a real eye-opener, I’m telling you. Especially about ordering "Today’s Special" and eating out on a Monday. *shudders*
And of course, I just have to sneak in a few articles on working conditions:
Info | Comment (0)How to Avoid Repetitive Strain Injury - "Repetitive motion puts a lot of strain on a muscle, therefore you must never hold any position for too long." I knew that already, but there are other good advice in the article.
Clutter and mess trump clean and neat - Messy vs neat, which is better? I think it depends on each individual, as everyone has different style and taste. One man’s meat is another man’s poison… Whatever rocks your boat, I say.
Fun time
Because of the Easter holiday, the university is closed from today to Tuesday next week. On one hand, it’s good to get a break and just laze about; on the other hand, I feel a bit guilty for not doing any work since I already took last week off to go to that conference. Oh well… What’s done is done. I’ll just enjoy my break then. *grins*
This afternoon a few friends and I decided to go to Victoria Park for a walk, since the weather is so nice! Yup, it’s bright and sunny - will wonder never cease? Anyway, at the park there were a few companies setting up hot air balloons. Actually, since last summer I really wanted to go up in one of those things, but it’s just too damn expensive! You have to pay at least 100 pound… I’m not joking people.
There was also a funfair going on in the park, so we went to have a look. Well, it’s not really a big one; there’s not even a Ferris wheel! But it was okay, not bad. I didn’t went on any of the rides though… *sheepish smile*
After that, we went for a walk around the park, and finished off with some ice-cream. Yummy! *grins*

I’ve read a few interesting articles lately; a few of them are about computers:
How to Recover Disk Space on your PC - this is quite useful! Especially when you have low disk space. But I’ve resorted to transferring my downloaded stuff to DVDs (4GB big!) now, because some of the files are just too big. *grins*
Improve PC Performance: Tune Up Windows - nice ways to keep Windows running smoothly. Some of them you might know, but it’s good to be reminded, right?
And some more articles related to working:
Info | Comment (0)Real-Life Resume Blunders to Avoid - this is quite good too. Some of them are quite logical, but you may not think so when you’re writing your resume. *grins*
Is Your Job in Jeopardy? - how to pay attention to the warning signs that your employer may be considering letting you go. Be on the alert! Just in case…
